You opened an AI tool — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, whichever — and then came the question everyone freezes on: what do I actually type? Here's the good news: there's one simple way to ask that works in every tool, and once it clicks, AI gets genuinely useful fast.
If you haven't chosen a tool yet, start with how to pick your first AI tool — then come back here. Everything below works the same no matter which one you landed on.
The tool barely matters — how you ask is everything
Here's the thing nobody tells beginners: the difference between a useless AI answer and a brilliant one usually isn't the tool, and it definitely isn't how "techie" you are. It's how much you give the AI to work with.
Type "sales email" and you'll get a generic template. Tell it who you are, what you need, and how you want it — and you'll get something you can almost send as-is. Same tool. Completely different result.
Start with this one prompt (a fill-in-the-blank you'll reuse forever)
Don't memorize a hundred prompts. Memorize one little recipe and you can ask for almost anything:
Four small parts, each doing a job: the role sets the expertise, your situation makes it personal, the task says what you actually want, and the format shapes the result. Here's the same recipe filled in three different ways:
- Write a tricky email: "Act as a friendly office manager. Here's my situation: a client missed a payment and I don't want to sound harsh. Help me write a short reminder email. Make it warm but clear, under 120 words."
- Get unstuck on your week: "Act as a calm planning coach. Here's my situation: I've got a packed week and feel scattered. Help me turn this list into a plan: [paste your list]. Make it a simple daily checklist."
- Finally understand something: "Act as a patient teacher. Here's my situation: I keep nodding along about 'cloud storage' but don't really get it. Explain it like I'm smart but brand new, with an everyday analogy."
Notice you didn't need any special commands — just plain English. That's the whole interface.
The real superpower: just keep talking
Here's where most beginners stop too soon. You do not have to get the perfect answer on the first try. AI remembers your conversation, so you can simply refine it like you're chatting with a helpful coworker:
- "Make it shorter."
- "That's a bit formal — warmer, please."
- "Give me three different versions."
- "Add a friendly opening line."
- "Explain that part more simply."
That back-and-forth is the skill. And you really can't break anything — the worst that happens is you ask again.
5 things to try in your tool today
Pick one and go — each takes about a minute:
- Turn a messy paragraph into 3 clear bullet points.
- Rewrite a text or email so it sounds kinder (or more confident).
- Ask it to explain something confusing in plain English.
- Brainstorm 10 ideas for something you're stuck on.
- Paste a long article and ask for a 5-bullet summary.
Yes, it works in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini
The recipe and the "keep talking" trick work exactly the same in ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini — and just about every other AI tool. That's the beauty of learning the skill instead of the software: switch tools any time and you're not starting over.

What exactly is a "prompt"?
It's just what you type to the AI — your instruction or question. That's it. No special syntax required.
How long should my prompt be?
Long enough to include who, what, and how. A sentence or two almost always beats a single word.
What if the answer is wrong or a bit off?
Just tell it: "that's not quite what I meant — here's the situation again." For facts, names, or numbers that matter, give them a quick check, the same as you would anything online.
Do I need to learn coding or commands?
Nope. Plain, everyday English is the entire skill. If you can text a friend, you can do this.
